September 27: A date behind which stand human lives

Baku, September 28, AZERTAC

There are dates that cannot be regarded as merely another line on the calendar. They become part of a society’s collective consciousness because they are associated with events that have changed the course of a country’s life and the destinies of thousands of people. For Azerbaijan, one such date is September 27 — the day, six years ago, when the events that went down in history as the 44-day Patriotic War began.

On the morning of September 27, 2020, the day began as an ordinary one for millions of Azerbaijanis. Yet within a few hours, the country found itself facing an entirely new reality. According to Azerbaijan’s official position, following the shelling of Azerbaijani positions and settlements, the Azerbaijani Armed Forces launched counter-offensive operations. The following 44 days were marked by intense fighting and profound challenges for society. On November 8, control over Shusha was established, and on November 10, a statement on the cessation of hostilities was adopted.

Today, these events can already be viewed from a certain historical distance. They changed the military and political realities of the region and opened a new stage for Azerbaijan — the restoration of the liberated territories, the return of people to their native homes, and the creation of conditions for peaceful life. However, the scale of what happened cannot be understood solely through military maps and political decisions. Behind them were individual people, for whom every day of the war became a personal ordeal.

A soldier on the front line did not know what the next hour would bring. His family was waiting for news. For some, a telephone call meant hope; for others, it brought news that changed their lives forever. According to the Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan, 2,783 servicemen were killed during the war. For the purposes of state records, this is a necessary statistic. Yet behind every figure was a human being — with a family, a profession, a character, and plans that would never be fulfilled.

This is what gives particular significance to the decision of December 2, 2020, to designate September 27 as Remembrance Day in Azerbaijan. The state established on the calendar a date associated not only with the beginning of the military events, but also with the names of those who lost their lives. In this way, the military chronicle acquired a human dimension, without which it would be impossible to fully comprehend what happened.

As time passes, another task emerges — preserving the evidence of this period for generations who were not direct witnesses to these events. Photographs, letters, awards, official documents, and the recollections of relatives and eyewitnesses gradually become historical sources. Their value is particularly significant today, while it is still possible to compare documentary evidence with personal testimonies, clarify details, and preserve them in a reliable form for future generations.

This is particularly important for young people. A child who was only a few years old in 2020 sees the events of that period from an entirely different perspective today. For such a generation, the war is gradually moving from the emotional experience of adults into the realm of school education and public history. Therefore, it is important that behind the dates, the names of settlements, and the military events there remains an understanding of the human dimension of what happened.

The history of the war should not be reduced merely to a list of battles and military outcomes. Behind every one of these facts stood a human being. If a military map shows how the territory changed, a family photograph reveals the human stories behind those changes. Bringing these two dimensions together makes it possible to understand the scale and complexity of the 44-day war more fully.

After the end of the hostilities, a new and major task arose before the country — the restoration of the liberated territories. The construction of roads and infrastructure, the reconstruction of towns and villages, the creation of modern living conditions, and the return of people to their native homes are gradually transforming places once associated with war into spaces of peaceful development. In this way, the results achieved in 2020 are finding their continuation not on the battlefield, but through reconstruction and development.

Six years have passed since that September morning. During this period, a new generation has grown up that will learn about the events of 2020 not through personal memories, but through documents, textbooks, museums, and the stories told by older generations. For them, it is important to understand not only the dates and names, but also that these events were inseparably connected with human lives. September 27 connects the past with the present: the remembrance of those who lost their lives, the outcomes of the 44-day war, and the ongoing reconstruction of the liberated territories are all part of the broader significance of this date. Preserving an accurate and reliable historical record, passing the experience of these events on to future generations, and consolidating the achievements through peaceful development give this date meaning not only for the present, but also for the future of Azerbaijan.
