ATMOSPHERIC POLLUTION IN GEORGIA HAS NEGATIVE EFFECT ON KUR RIVER
Although, the Georgian capital occupies only 0.5% of the country’s territory, one fifth of population and one third of industrial production are concentrated in Tbilisi. In specialists’ opinion, the atmospheric pollution exceeds the maximum allowable concentration more than six times, 82% of which is caused by motor transport, and 18% by contaminants discharged to the atmosphere by stationary sources. Such intensive atmospheric pollution in Tbilisi has a negative effect on Kur River flowing through the Georgian capital and dividing the city in half. The river is known to be one of the main water sources in Azerbaijan. According to Georgy Gachechiladze, the leader of the ‘Greens Party’, every kind of bacteria and microbes may be revealed in the Kur River’s part flowing through Tbilisi.
